Stiff and Stuck Fingers? Understanding the Causes and Symptoms of Trigger Finger

by 진심의 2025. 3. 2.

What is Trigger Finger?

Trigger finger is a condition where a finger feels stiff when bent or suddenly makes a "clicking" sound and snaps straight when extended. The name comes from the way the finger moves, similar to pulling and releasing a trigger.

Causes of Trigger Finger

This condition occurs when inflammation develops between the finger tendon (Tendon) and its protective sheath (Tendon Sheath).

1) Tendon Inflammation and Thickening

Repeated use of the fingers can cause the tendon to become irritated, leading to inflammation and thickening over time.

2) Narrowing of the Tendon Sheath

The passage through which the tendon moves (tendon sheath) becomes too tight, making it difficult for the tendon to glide smoothly, causing it to get stuck.

3) Formation of Nodules (Lumps)

If the tendon thickens or small lumps (nodules) form, they can get caught in the narrowed tendon sheath, resulting in a "clicking" sound when the finger moves.

Common Symptoms

- Stiffness or a catching sensation when bending the finger
- A snapping or clicking sound when straightening the finger
- Symptoms are usually worse in the morning and improve throughout the day
- Pain or a small lump in the palm at the base of the affected finger
- In severe cases, the finger may become locked in a bent position and may not straighten

Trigger finger most commonly affects the thumb, middle finger, and ring finger. It is also more common in women than in men.

Why Does Trigger Finger Happen?

Repetitive Finger Movements

  • Frequent use of smartphones, typing, playing musical instruments, and using tools increases the risk.

Occupations That Require Frequent Hand Use

  • Homemakers, hairstylists, carpenters, chefs, and others who use their hands a lot are more likely to develop this condition.

Connection to Inflammatory Diseases

  • Diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout can increase the risk of developing trigger finger.

Hormonal Changes

  • Pregnant women and those going through menopause are more prone to this condition.
